Choir of the Hamburg State Opera

Almost every evening they appear in different roles on the stage of the Hamburg State Opera. Sometimes they are sailors, pilgrims or conspirators, then again courtiers, hunters, madmen or prisoners. As crusaders they went to Jerusalem in I Lombardi alla prima Crociata, they accompanied Madama Butterfly to her wedding and cheered Prince Igor: the singers of the opera choir demonstrate their artistic skills, their versatility and their joy of playing anew in every performance.

With its approximately 70 members, the Hamburg State Opera Chorus has been one of the world's best opera choirs for many years. The diverse repertoire - almost exclusively in original language - is wide-ranging, from baroque and play operas to the great works of Verdi and Wagner and contemporary compositions. The high artistic level of the opera choir was shaped by the direction of Professor Jürgen Schulz from 1981 to 2002, and Florian Csizmadia held the post of choir director from 2002 to 2012. In 2013, Eberhard Friedrich took over as director.
